Mathematics A Level at The Wensleydale School & Sixth Form

Course description

Mathematics is a system of organised thought employed in science, technology, music, architecture, economics, sociology, sport and commerce. The subject has made a major contribution to the development of the modern world and offers fascinating insights into many areas of endeavour.

Course content

This course focuses on problem solving, order, pattern and the prediction and creation of new knowledge through a study of:
- Pure mathematics (Core Mathematics)
- Statistics
- Mechanics


Teaching methods are varied to suit content, and involve exposition by the teacher, investigation and experiment, discussion, practical work and the use of IT. Proofs of important results are always offered and a number of interesting philosophical implications are explored. The course is modular and offers re-sit options.

Future opportunities

Mathematics is an integral part of any STEM degree (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The Statistical work will serve students well in the Social Sciences and Mathematics qualifications can lead to a wide variety of opportunities in Business and Law.
