A level English Language at Garforth Academy

Course description

The aim of the course is to enable you to develop a deeper understanding of the ways that language is used and manipulated by yourself and those around you.

This can cover anything from media representations and the skilful manipulation of word order, to the ways in which social identity can affect and shape your word choices.

Course content

During the two year course, you will become familiar with the ways in which the English language has evolved since the 1600's, and develop a deep understanding of how this ha led to modern English as we know it.

Furthermore, you will also study the ways in which children learn to read and write, giving you a deeper understanding of the ways humans are able to communicate with each other.

These methods of analysis will not only allow you to interpret language in the world around you, but also help you to produce more effective writing yourself.

When completing coursework you will be asked to produce a piece of original writing aimed at persuading, informing or telling a story, and it is with these new skils that your writing can be lifted from the everyday to the extraordinary.
