Carpentry (Site or Bench) Joinery City and Guilds Level 2 at Herefordshire & Ludlow College

Course description

This course is delivered in purpose-built workshops which have been equipped with industry-standard machinery and resources.

The practical emphasis of the course will build your confidence and capabilities, preparing you for either employment or further study. Students have the opportunity to visit various sites to learn more about the industry.

Course content

This course is a mixture of practical workshop sessions and classroom theory lessons with an emphasis on learning by doing. You will develop and further your skills including first and second fix components and erecting structural carcassing components.

 You will cover a diverse range of topics throughout your course. A selection of unit titles is shown below.

Bench Joinery

  • Knowledge of Building Methods and Construction Technology
  • Manufacture Joinery Items
  • Mark Out Details for Joinery Items

Site Carpentry

  • Carry Out First Fix Operations
  • Carry Out Second Fix
  • Erect Structural Carcassing

Entry requirements

Applicants without suitable experience will normally be advised to commence study at Level 1.

  • Successful and satisfactory completion of a suitable and relevant Level 1 qualification eg.Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery
  • Alternatively, applicants who can evidence suitable experience or aptitude will also be considered
  • Successful interview and initial assessment in literacy and numeracy
  • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area


Achievement is by assessment of practical and theory units, a multiple choice online test and practical test.

  • Day-release Level 3 Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery (part-time)
  • Advanced Apprenticeship in Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery

Employment options may include:

  • Apprenticeship in Bench Joinery or Site Carpentry
  • Shop Fitting
  • Heritage Skills, e.g. oak timber framing
  • Modern Timber Frame House Construction
