Biology A-Level at Kenton School

Course description

Students study three mandatory units at AS and three further mandatory units at A2. Two of the AS and two of the A2 units are externally assessed. The third AS unit and the third A2 unit are internally assessed and will include the assessment of practical skills. During unit 5 the fieldwork section is usually carried out during a residential field course.

Course content

The AS/A Level is divided into two parts, AS and A2. AS + A2= A Level. The AS course contains three modules;

  1. Cells, Exchange and Transport: Cells, cell membranes, cell division, exchange surfaces and breathing, transport in animals and plants.
  2. Molecules, Biodiversity, Food and Health Biological molecules, nucleic acids, enzymes, diet and food production, health and disease, biodiversity, classification, evolution, maintaining biodiversity.
  3. Practical Skills in Biology Practical tasks

The A2 course contains three modules;

  1. Communications, Homeostasis and Energy Communication, nerves, hormones, excretion, photosynthesis, respiration.
  2. Control, Genomes and Environment Cellular control, meiosis and variation, cloning in plants and animals, biotechnology, genomes and gene technologies, ecosystems, populations and sustainability, plant responses, animal responses, animal behaviour.
  3. Practical skills in Biology 2 Practical tasks

Entry requirements

A minimum of B grade Biology, C grade Maths, Cgrade English. Must pass ‘Bridging Course’ in 3rdweek of course to progress.


Syllabus/Exam Board/Level

OCR Biology (AS- H021 / A2- H421 ) Level 3

AS and A2 units will be examined in June. Units 1, 2, 4 and 5 will be assessed by written papers. Units 3 and 6 are coursework based and will be assessed internally

Future opportunities

Many students who study Biology at A Level continue with the subject at university. Biology graduates are in demand for managerial posts in a wide range of industries and services, as well as those who choose to remain in their subject area.
