History A Level at Cotswold Edge Sixth Form
The course offered is an exciting and fascinating one! It provides you with an opportunity to learn about some of the most important events ever to have taken place and some of the most influential people ever to have lived. Topics range from the dramatic changes in Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century, the extraordinary story of the civil rights movement in America and how and why the superpowers clashed after the end of the Second World War. Closer to home, students will study the dramatic changes that took place under the Tudor dynasty and the significant political, economic and social developments that have shaped modern Britain.
All students will follow a depth study, a breadth study and complete a piece of coursework, though as outlined below each centre will follow different topics. To comply with the new rules we must include topics from a chronological range of at least 200 years and a minimum of 20% British History.
For all Level 3 courses, students are expected to have achieved a minimum of 5 GGSEs at grade C or equivalent. For A Levels this should include both English and Maths.
• Students will sit two external exams at the end of Year 13, and will also complete a piece of coursework during Year 13
• The two exams are each worth 40% of the total, and the coursework is worth 20%.
• Students can sit an AS exam at the end of Year 12, although this will not count towards their final A Level grade, it is a stand-alone qualification.
History A-Level is a rewarding and fascinating area of study that can open doors throughout your future. In studying history you will not only learn about the past and how it has shaped the world today, but will also develop valuable analytical, evaluative and literacy skills that will help you wherever you go.
These skills are highly respected by business and other professions and will help you to pursue careers in journalism, law, management, marketing, media, accountancy, education and many others. History is a very popular A Level subject at present, with recent students currently studying History at King’s College, London and Law at Cambridge to give but two examples from many.
