Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair Technology Level 2 Subsidiary Diploma at Bridgwater College

Course description

This course is for school and college leavers (16-19 year olds) who wish to join the automotive industry. Individuals (who are not employed in the industry) who want the opportunity to develop occupational knowledge and carry out practical tasks.

Course content

The learning programme involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the essential knowledge and skills required by today's motorcycle repair industry. Learners also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a motorcycle garage.

Topics include:

Health and Safety Practices, Tools, Equipment and Materials, Motorcycle Maintenance, Internal Engine Systems, Fuel, Ignition, Air and Exhaust System, Motorcycle Preparation and Inspection, Wheels, tyres, steering, suspension, braking, transmission and electrical and electronic systems.

Functional Skills/GCSE are a compulsory part of all full time study programs. Students set targets to improve their skills and gain qualifications, in English and Maths. The Functional Skills/GCSE’s and levels taken are based on initial assessment and previous GCSE results.

Entry requirements

You must have completed a Level 1 (or equivalent) in an automotive related qualification or can demonstrate experience and knowledge in the motorcycle industry. Suitability and acceptance onto the course will be discussed at an interview.


The learner’s knowledge and skills are assessed using a combination of methods including:

  • practical skills assessments in a motor cycle workshop environment
  • written knowledge assessments
  • assignments and course work
  • online multiple-choice test

Future opportunities

For some learners this qualification could prepare them for progression to further learning and training. For others, this qualification could also provide a useful recognition of their practical skills and knowledge, to aid their step from one job role to another.
