PE - BTEC Level 3 in Sport and Exercise Sciences (Edexcel) at Churchdown School Academy

Course description

2 year course offered as part of a full time study programme

Course content

If you are considering a career in Sport whether this is in education, fitness, therapy, or performance, this course is aimed at you. You will learn through a mix of theory based and practical sessions to gain a solid grounding in all aspects of Sport. You’ll gain an insight to all areas of Sport. You will need to have studied GCSE PE and gained a minimum of a C grade. The content of the work you will have already studied at GCSE will set you on the route for this course.

Entry requirements

Pathway 2: A combination of A levels and Level 3 Vocational Courses

•        5 A*to C Grades (Merits in BTEC and Vocational Courses) and meeting any subject specific requirements (see below)

Pathway 3: Level 3 Vocational Courses

•        5 A* to C Grades including Level 2 equivalents


All assessment is coursework based, this can however be presented in various aspects.

• Written Work

• Reports • Presentations

• Practically

Deadlines will be set for all work and need to be kept completed on time.

Further information

In Year 12 students will complete four mandatory units

Unit 1: Principles in Anatomy and Physiology in Sport

Unit 2: The Physiology of Fitness

Unit 3: Assessing Risk in Sport

Unit 4: Fitness Training and Programming

In Year 13 students will also complete 3 further units that will be structured around the student’s strengths and further career needs.

BTEC is a diverse course which will challenge your understanding of a range of sport science areas.  BTEC is coursework based and will require you to recall classroom information and to meet regular deadlines throughout the year. 

BTEC in Sport is a Level 3 course and will give access to Higher Education Sports Awards
