Creative Writing A Level at St Vincent College

Course description

This practical academic course requires you to study and produce different kinds of creative and professional writing, which can be produced for a range of media. You will develop your ability to write in prose fiction, prose non-fiction, poetry or script, either for page, performance, radio, screen or digital media. This course allows you to explore how writing is crafted in order to express individual visions, a process of discovery that will examine and refer to published examples, developing your critical and analytical skills, in order to apply these to your own work.

Course content

AS Level

Unit 1 – Writing on Demand

You will:
• Read and write a variety of texts from the professional world
• Study a wide range of genres, noting particularly how different writers communicate ideas effectively in different styles
• Learn how to write to a specific professional brief, showing appropriate writing skills in limited time

Unit 2 – Exploring Creative Writing

You will:
• Develop creative work by generating original ideas, drafting and redrafting your work
• Explore your own ideas and interests by experimenting in different forms and genres
• Produce a reflective commentary that demonstrates critical awareness of your own writing process

A Level

Unit 3 – From Reading to Writing

You will:
• Use published texts as stimuli for your own creative work
• Demonstrate your ability to analyse aspects of other writers’ craft and show how you apply this to your own writing

Unit 4 – The Writing Portfolio

You will:
• Deepen your creative use of language and technical mastery of one chosen form
• Respond to critical feedback in redrafting your creative work and reflecting critically on your own creative process and achievements

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs grade A* – C which MUST include English Language AND English Literature

Assessment

Assessed by one external examinations and one coursework portfolio at the end of each year
