Study Programme Highlights

This is the study programme that will challenge both your kitchen and restaurant skills and inspire you to craft your own dishes and get your own style.

Guest chefs and industry professionals will take you to the next level of taste and service! You will showcase your talents at festivals and competitions such as the Suffolk Show and University of Suffolk Summer Ball – you will work on a range of high profile events in our own Shelley’s restaurant and develop your bakery skills in our Granary.

Course content

This study programme is for you if you want to learn chef skills in our fantastic kitchens alongside serving food and drink to our customer base in our excellent restaurant, known as Shelley’s. You will also experience our Granary café and produce a range of food items for lunch served to the students in the Atrium. There are exciting internal and external events such as the Mayors Ball and the Suffolk Show that you will participate in as part of our high quality student team. You may want to seek a junior kitchen or restaurant position in a wide range of hospitality outlets including fine dining hotels and restaurants, bistros and cafes

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D or grade 3 including GCSE English Language, or a relevant vocational qualification

Financial information

No tuition fees are payable for students aged 16 – 18 on 31 August 2017.

For all students aged 19+ fees are £3345. Details regarding fee remission and Advanced Learner Loans can be found at www.suffolk.ac.uk/courses/tuition-fees

Future opportunities

You will be able to gain employment in a Commis Chef or front of house position in the Hospitality and catering industry, in hotels, restaurants and bistros. You can develop your skills further with a level 3 professional chef, level 3 supervision in food and beverage services or follow the Advanced Apprentice route

Student Case Study

Tilly Warne worked hard in her practical studies and produced amazing dishes that show off her range of skills and professionalism. Tilly had work experience at Milsoms fine dining venue, and entered a national competition as well as working on large corporate functions such as the University of Suffolk Summer ball cooking for 600! She continues to work in industry to gain further skills and intends to enroll onto the L3 Professional Chef course in 15/16 to expand her skills and range of techniques further.
