Music A Level at Kesteven and Sleaford High School Selective Academy
Students prepare a recital of between 8-10 minutes which is performed to and marked by a visiting examiner.
They compose 2 pieces: One composition demonstrating the musical techniques and conventions associated
with the Western Classical Tradition and One free composition. They complete a listening examination in two
parts: Part 1: appraising test based on the set works studied and Part 2: aural perception (melodic dictation,
keys, chords, cadences) based on unprepared musical extracts.
At A2 pupils can choose one specialist unit (performing, composing or listening and appraising). Depending on
which they choose to specialise in depends on the length of performance recital required, number of
compositions created and amount of analysing and listening work they complete. (More information can be
found at www.wjec.co.uk).
Grade V or above on at least one instrument or voice for AS, Grade VI for A2.B or above in GCSE Music. You must be receiving tuition on at least one instrument.
