COURSE INFORMATION

No prior knowledge of religion is required. If you like looking for answers to fundamental questions, or you are of a curious nature with an enquiring mind - this course is for you.

Entry requirements

5 A* - C at GCSE including English and Maths.

Assessment

SPECIFICATION AND UNITS OF STUDY

AS Units Studied:

• Module 1 - Buddhism:

- The life and work Gautama the Buddha and the foundations of Buddhism

- The 4 Noble Truths

- Central doctrines: nibbana, Karma, Samsara, the three marks of existence

- The Fourfold Sangha: monastic and lay practices

- The Spread of Buddhism

AS Level - 50% A Level - 25%

 

• Module 2 - Ethics:

- Ethical theory: Natural Law Theory, Situation ethics,

Utilitarianism, concept of absolute and relative morality

- Practical Ethics: War and Peace, Medical Ethics (abortion,

genetic engineering, euthanasia)

AS Level - 50% A Level - 25%

 

A2 Units Studied:

• Module 1 - Buddhism:

- Difference between Therevada and Mahayana schools of thought

- Distinctive features of Zen and Pure Land Buddhism

- Aims and methods of meditation

- Buddhist scripture

- Religious practices

- Buddhism in the West

- Investigation into Tibetan Buddhism

- Buddhist ethics

A Level - 25%

 

• Module 2 - Ethics:

- Free Will and Determinism

- Nature and role of the conscience

- Meta – ethics

- Virtue ethics

- Practical ethics: Environmental ethics, Sex ethics, Business ethics

Synoptic Assessment included in both units at A2: concept of deity and relationship with humanity, authority and truth in religion, experience and religion, the Human Condition

A Level - 25%

This is an accepted qualification for people intending to further their studies or who wish to move into employment which requires a good critical understanding of the world we live in.
