Course content

There are 7 Areas of Study:

•  Western Classical Tradition 1650 - 1910
•  Pop music
•  Music for media
•  Music for theatre
•  Jazz
•  Contemporary traditional music
•  Art music since 1910

Students must study Western Classical Tradition and choose one other from a different Area of Study

Assessment

Appraising Music
This is assessed on listening, analysis and contextual understanding.
The  Exam  paper  is  taken  in  the  summer  term  with listening and written questions using excerpts of music
The unit is worth 40% of AS marks (96 marks in total

Performance
Requires  solo  and/or  ensemble  as  an  instrumentalist and/or vocalist and/or music production (50 marks)
A minimum of 6 minutes of performance in total
The unit is worth 30% of AS marks (50% marks in total)
This component is externally marked by AQA examiners and sent between 1st and 31st May

Composition
You create two compositions during the year
Composition one is to a given brief (25 marks)
Composition two is Free Composition (25 marks)
A total of  four and a half minutes in total. This component is externally marked by AQA examiners and sent between 1st and 31st May.
