Public Services BTEC Level 2 at Lancaster and Morecambe College

Course description

The BTEC Extended Certificate in Public Services is a one year, full time, work related course aimed at students who wish to consider a career in one of Britain’s Public Services. During the course you will have considerable contact with the range of public services through visits, exercises, short residential experiences and work observations. You will be expected to participate in a range of challenging out of College activities where the emphasis will be on team development.

Course content

You will follow a core syllabus covering: • Career Planning • Public Service Skills • Uniformed Public Service Fitness and the following specialist units: • Land Navigation • Adventurous Activities • Citizenship

All students aged 16 -19 are required to study Functional Skills English and maths qualifications or GCSE mathematics and English if not already awarded a grade A*-C in these subjects. If you have a grade D at GCSE you will study maths and/or English GCSE. Students with a grade lower than D will work towards GCSE through the study of maths and English Functional Skills. 

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade A*-D including English or maths OR a Level 1 related qualification. Entry criteria will be applied at the discretion of the course manager.

Assessment

This course is continuously assessed using a range of methods including projects, assignments, case studies, course work, personal fitness development and performance in team activities. There will be no final examination.

Financial information

You will be expected to pay £55.00 for travelling costs and £50.00 for course clothing. 

Future opportunities

The course prepares students for the selection procedures of the uniformed services and/or allows them to progress onto a higher level course such as Public Services BTEC Level 3. 

Further information

On completion of this course you will receive Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Public Services (gaining a Pass at this stage is equivalent to four GCSEs at grade C). 

You will be expected to undertake regular home study on this course.
