Applied Science (Forensic Science) BTEC Level 3 Diploma at West Herts College

Course description

This course is your next step towards working in the fields of science or criminology, providing you with the key skills and knowledge required for a rewarding, professional career.

You’ll need to be methodical, meticulous and ready to accept new challenges.

As well as learning many new skills you’ll find that your communication skills develop. Professional presentation is a vital skill for any forensic scientist. Learning how to assemble and process data while being articulate about your findings will be central to your learning with us.

Course content

Subjects span natural science and social science, providing a theoretical and practical feel for this progressive field of study. Subjects include:

  • Fundamentals of science

  • Criminology

  • Scientific practical techniques

  • Using mathematical tools in science

  • Genetics and genetic engineering

  • Chemical laboratory techniques

  • Forensic evidence collection and analysis

  • Criminal investigation procedures and practice

You’ll also study a range of specialisms including:

  • Working in the science industry

  • Perceptions of science

  • Practical chemical analysis

  • Physiology of human body systems

  • Criminology

  • Criminal psychology

  • Microbiological techniques

  • Chemistry for biology technicians

  • Applications of forensic psychology

  • Scientific investigations

In addition, there will be opportunities to develop your English and maths and take part in GAP work placements.

You will study towards the L3 diploma (90 credits) in your first year and progress on to the extended diploma (180 credits) in the second year.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs (A* - C) including English, maths and double science, or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma or equivalent. You will then be invited to a course introduction meeting.

Future opportunities

Careers range from marine biologist to clinical psychologist. Alternatively, you could move onto a Higher National Diploma (HND) here at College or a BA Honours Degree in a related area.
