AS/A2 Chemistry at Bridgewater High School

Course description

What will I study?

In year 12 you will develop the ideas covered at KS4 including: atoms and reactions; electrons, bonding and structure; the Periodic Table; alkanes & hydrocarbons; energy and identifying substances. In year 13 you will delve deeper into year 12 work and are introduced to new ideas about rates, equilibrium, pH and transition elements; mathematics is applied widely in within this unit. Throughout the course, practical skills are developed and assessed.

  • Unit 2: Chains, Energy and Resources
  • Unit 3: Practical skills in Chemistry 1
  • Unit 4: Rings, Polymers and Analysis
  • Unit 5: Equilibria, Energetics and Elements
  • Unit 6: Practical skills in Chemistry 2AS

How will I be assessed?

AS Year:

Unit 1: Written exam in January worth 30% of AS (15% of A2)

Unit 2: Written exam in June worth 50% of AS (25% of A2)

Unit 3: Practical skills assessments marked internally, moderated externally. Worth 20% of AS (10% of A2)

A2 Year:

Unit 4: Written exam in January worth 15% of A2

Unit 5: Written exam in June worth 25% of A2

Unit 6: Practical skills assessment marked internally, moderated externally worth 10% of A2


Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at A* - C or equivalent, including English and Mathematics and at least a grade B in GCSE Chemistry or B in Science and B in Additional Science.
