Games Design Level 3 at Northampton College

Course description

Our new programme in Games Design will provide you with an opportunity to begin your journey in the games design industry. Using industry software and hardware in our purpose built Mac suites will give you the best possible start. You will have the opportunity to design your own game prototypes, as well as study how games work as a product or format. You will research key players in the games design industry who will inspire you when it is your time to pitch your own ideas. By the end of the course, you will have a range of skills that will prepare you for your next step, as well as gaining transferable skills relevant to broader fields. Although games design is at the core of what you will cover on this pathway, you will also be introduced to the theoretical background of the industry and its place within the creative arts through our compulsory research and planning units. The course covers: the games industry, games design, games production, 3D animation, 3D modelling, games sound design and concept art/observational drawing and uses a range of creative software including CryEngine, MAYA and AfterEffects. Delivery methods will include practical workshop sessions in our impressive Mac suites with industry standard software. Classroom-based theory sessions are supported by IT and computer-based research and educational visits to industry trade fairs and other games industry-related events. There will also be the opportunity to get a better understanding of the world of work through work experience opportunities, where possible. And after studying the new Level 3 Games Design at Northampton College you will have the opportunity to further your aspirations by progression on to university or into the work place with the skills, knowledge and confidence to make your mark in the games design world. The units covered in the course are likely to include: - Media Representations - Working in the Creative Media Industry - Digital Media Skills - Pre production portfolio - Specialist subject investigation - Media Campaigns - Responding to a Commission - 3D Modelling - 3D Environments - Digital Games Production - Concept art for computer games - Games testing And many others.

Course content

Students who are looking to work in the games design industry or to study the subject to a higher level (HND and/or degree level).

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade C or above including English Language and maths or a Level 2 Diploma in Media at Merit level with English Language and maths at Grade C or above.

Assessment

Most of the assessment will be by both practical and written assignments throughout the programme, which are internally assessed. From 2016, the new Extended Diploma in Creative Digital Media Production will have a number of externally assessed units. These will be in the form of online exams, externally set tasks carried out over a set time period and performance assessed by an external examiner.

Further information

You will be asked to pay for materials and trips at enrolment. The fee is currently £50 to cover trips and £175 for a basic kit which includes 1 TB external hard-drive, 16gb SD card, Course handbook, card reader, headphones and the use of an online portfolio for storing your work.
