Workstart Level 1 at Newbury College

Course description

Workstart is a full time course designed to enable students to progress into an apprenticeship or employment, either paid or voluntary. This is a one year course, though in some cases can be extended to two years.



The Pre-Apprenticeship componenet consists of a qualification in employability and customer service (the BTEC Work Skills Level 1 Diploma), plus Maths and English are also studied.

The Employment Training will lead to a meaningful job application endorsed by an employer. It will start with an in-house placement, then an extrnal work placement, and finally progression into paid employment or voluntary work.

The final element is Confidence Building. Students will carry out a range of presentation activities to develop self-awareness and confidence. This will include Duke of Edinburgh Award, Skills Project and Expressive Arts.

Entry requirements

Entry Level or Level 1 qualification. And possibly have completed other courses in Foundation Learning. All students will have an interview.


Assessment will be by completion of qualifications in Employability and Customer Service; these are portfolio-based. All learner portfolios will be assessed internally and externally.

Future opportunities

In some cases progression will be to a second year of Workstart. Whilst other students will be able to progress to paid or voluntary employment, a Traineeship, or an Apprenticeship.
