Electronics at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi

Course description

This course follows the WJEC syllabus, and offers students a firm foundation in Electronics knowledge and understanding, together with mathematical competence for those wishing to proceed to further studies in Electronics, Engineering or the Natural Sciences.

Course content

Year 12 Programme of Study

Unit ET1: Introduction to Digital and Analogue Systems

A detailed look at logic gates such as AND, NOT, EXOR etc., and Boolean algebra.

Unit ET2: Electronic Circuits and Components

An in-depth study of resistors, capacitors, diodes and the mathematical rules that predict their behaviour.

Unit ET3: Programmable Control System Project.

This unit focuses on programming language to allow the development & manufacture of a functional micro-controller [a chip].


Year 13 Programme of Study

Unit ET4: Electronic communications Systems

An investigation of digital & analogue communications, including amplifiers, filters, modulation and radio receivers.

Unit ET5: Electronic Systems Applications.

This final theory module applies the knowledge gained in the previous modules to a wide range of electronic devices and applications.

Unit ET6: Electronic Design Project

This extended project involves designing, building and testing an electronic system and should be completed in 25 hours in the laboratory.


Year 12 Assessment

ET1 – Written Exam (1 hour 30 minutes) usually sat in January 35% of AS / 17.5% of A level

ET2 – Written Exam (1 hour 30 minutes) sat in Summer 35% of AS / 17.5% of A level

ET3 – Practical Assessment 30% of AS / 15% of A level

Year 13 Assessment

ET4 – Written Exam (1 hour 45 minutes) sat in January 15% of A level

ET5 – Written Exam (1 hour 45 minutes) sat in Summer 20% of A level

ET6 – Practical Project 15% of A level
