AS Mathematics at Ken Stimpson Community School
This is an academically rigorous course that will develop your skills in problem solving and the logical mathematical method to thinking skills. The units studied are: •Core 1: Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration. •Core 2: Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration. •Statistics 1: Mathematical models in probability and statistics; representation and summary of data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; discrete distributions; the Normal distribution.
At A2 level the units studied are: •Core 3: Algebra and functions; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; numerical methods. •Core 4: Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration; vectors. •Statistics 2: The Binomial and Poisson distributions; continuous random variables; continuous distributions; samples; hypothesis tests.
Grade B GCSE in Mathematics.
You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A level part of an Advanced GCE in Mathematics, which could lead onto higher education in areas of Mathematics, related areas such as Engineering, Economics, Physics or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Mathematics such as an Accountant, Engineer, Financial Adviser or Teacher. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
