Computer Science will provide students with the fundamentals of computing and has a strong, practical programming element. Students will have the opportunity to study different programming languages ranging from Python to PHP or Visual Basic. They will learn about the theoretical side of computational thinking and look at how advanced computer programs and algorithms can be used to solve different problems.

   •   Stationery costs and packs

   •   Books and revision guides

   •   Educational trips/residential trips

   •   University Open Day visit costs

   •   Employment/apprenticeship opportunities

Bursaries are available to students in the following categories:

Category One:

Students who are identified by the government at ‘most vulnerable’ will be eligible for a guaranteed bursary of £1,200.

Category Two:

Family income is below threshold for working tax credits/free school meals.

Future opportunities

Students who have successfully completed this course can go on to study computer science at university. Students can also pursue aspirational careers in fields such as web development, software engineering, electrical engineering and artificial intelligence. Computer science is also well suited to those who wish to undertake an apprenticeship. Many digital and technology companies in West Yorkshire are keen to employ young people who are able to code and have a theoretical knowledge of how computers work.

Further information

If you have an interest in developing your programming and logical thinking skills and like to code, then this is the course for you. Students should already have an interest in all things to do with computers and should have studied a computing-related course at GCSE.

Whilst not essential, this course is well suited to students also studying mathematics and physics.

Sixth form students in the computer science department have the opportunity to participate in the national Student Robotics Competition and other STEM related opportunities.
