Course description

Paper 1: Comprehension – Listening, Reading & Translation

Topic areas: Society, political and artistic culture, immigration, multiculturalisation, history 

Paper 2: Writing – Translation and Essay

Critical essay on a prescribed film and literary text plus a short translation exercise

Paper 3: Speaking

Two discussions with stimulus material

Entry requirements

GCSE grade B and above. An A or an A* is recommended.


  • Paper 1: (Comprehension) 40%
  • Paper 2: (Writing) 30%
  • Paper 3: (Speaking) 30%
  • Coursework: Internally assessed, externally moderated (20%)

Further information

During the course many students may also have the opportunity of short residential visits to the countries where their language(s) is spoken and there are Work Experience links too. Occasional trips to the cinema and the theatre are also part of the Sixth Form experience.
