A-level Physics at Northfleet School for Girls

Course description

Topics covered in the first year
include electricity, radiation, waves
and mechanics.
In the second year topics include
thermal physics, nuclear physics and
one optional topic possibly based
on student preferences.
Practical work will include
interference and diffraction of laser
light, measuring acceleration due to
gravity, investigating magnetic fields
and gas laws.
 
For students who have a passion for physics and
enjoys practical work. They want to
take their GCSE studies further and
want to apply their knowledge to
unfamiliar situations.
They want to understand the
fundamental nature of matter and
study the smallest particles that
exist.

Entry requirements

Where Triple Science is
studied Level 6/5/5 or above.
Where Double Science is
studied students should
achieve Level 6/6
Grade 6 in Maths

Assessment

For AS level there are 2 x 1 ½ hour
examinations.
For A level there are 3 x 2 hour
examinations, at least 15% of the
questions will cover practicals you
have studied.
You will also have to complete 12
core practicals over the 2 years.
