Music *FEES PAYABLE* at Canford School

Course description

Music is one of the few subjects which retains a 6 unit structure. This is
due to the obvious division of the subject into its three component
elements, as shown above. The workload, however, in each unit is not all
that large, and so is no greater than subjects which are now divided into
4 units.
For performing, the expected standard is grade 5 at AS, and grade 6 at
A2. Extra marks are awarded, however, if you play at grades 6,7 or (at
A2) grade 8 level. You can choose the pieces you would like to play but
at A2 level your recital needs to have a theme, or link between all of the
pieces you choose. You can attempt your performing at any point during
the course, and can have several goes if you need to!
At AS, you will write a short composition to a brief (subject) set by the
board. At A2, you have the option of writing ‘techniques’ exercises, for example, a chorale in the style of Bach. These are easier than they sound
as there are lots of rules to follow and straightforward ways of writing
them. You could, though, continue with ‘free’ composition.
History, Aural and Analysis
This is where you study set works by ‘real’ composers, learning about
their place in musical history, and about the structure of the pieces
themselves. The aural component is similar to GCSE, but obviously is a
bit more advanced!
