Work Based Animal Care Certificate/Diploma Level 2 at Sandwell College

Course description

This one-year course is aimed at young people who would like a career working with animals in such areas as animal welfare, farming, zoos, wildlife establishments, dog grooming, pet care and retail, animal training, animal wardens or education and entertainment.

Course content

The course will involve working with both farm and exotic animals. Students will be placed at various locations throughout the West Midlands. Sturdy boots and overalls will be provided for farm placements.

Entry requirements

For the Diploma, you will need English, Maths and Science GCSEs at Grade C or above. For the Certificate, students will be accepted if they have Grade D in these subjects but will be expected to re-sit their GCSEs. You will be also undertake a formal interview and complete a medical form.


Students will build a portfolio of evidence of their skills and achievements and will be assessed on both practical and written work.

Future opportunities

You can then progress on to our Level 2 course in dog grooming or go on to a variety of other animal care courses.
