A Level Applied Science at The Elmgreen School

Course description

The applied science route is for you if you wish to study a broad range of science subjects to keep their career prospects open for a wide range of scientific disciplines. This programme provides the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for future scientists. Applied Science can be combined with any other subject but it goes particularly well with BTEC Sport.

Course content

First Year (AS): Five core modules:

  •  Fundamentals of science
  •  Mathematics
  •  Perceptions of science
  •  Scientific practical technique
  •  Working in the science industry


Second Year (A2):

  •  Physiology
  •  Biochemical Techniques
  •  Microbial Techniques
  •  Chemical Laboratory Techniques
  •  Industrial Applications of Chemistry
  •  Maths
  •  Informatics
  •  Genes and Genetic Engineering

Entry requirements

You will normally be expected to have gained five GCSEs, including Maths and Science at Grade C or above, or an equivalent qualification, such as BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science.

Assessment

Assessment will be by coursework throughout the duration of the course.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this programme students will be qualified to work in a range of science based careers such as Materials Testing, Quality Control, Product Development, Microbiology, and Analytical Chemistry. The programme also allows for progression onto Higher Education including Degree level science programmes many Biology, Chemistry or Physics related programmes.
