Chemistry A level at The Ecclesbourne School

Course description

The Chemistry A Level course at Ecclesbourne aims for you to acquire the knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of modern chemistry, enhance your ability to study both independently and co-operatively and develop sound attitudes of mind, including interest, initiative, open-mindedness and a positive attitude towards the study of and applications of Chemistry. It will
enable you to become aware of the nature of scientific and technological endeavour and of the various contexts in which the work of chemists is essential to society.

In Year 12 you will study units of work containing the following themes: ‘The Elements of Life,’ ‘Developing Fuels,’ ‘Elements from the Sea,’ ‘The Atmosphere’ and ‘The Polymer Revolution.’ In Unit 2 you will have to answer questions on an "Advanced Notice Article" which contains details of recent chemical research and
endeavours, related to F332, distributed at least four weeks before the exam. You will also study a Chemistry in Practice unit, where you will be assessed in five skill areas: competence, measurement, analysis and evaluation, observation, and
interpretation. At A2 you will study two further modules, as well as the Chemistry Individual Investigation. This is a coursework unit where students will be assessed on 8 experimental research skill areas through an extended, individually chosen practical investigation topic.
