Business at The Sixth Form College Colchester
This course is designed to provide students with a critical understanding of the internal functions of business organisations and how the external environment can affect the decision making of a business. It includes new business start-ups and small and
medium sized enterprises and the issues that surround the process of planning a new business. Types of business organisations, the markets in which they operate and their various stakeholders will also be covered.
Analytical techniques will be studied to develop appropriate business strategies using and analysing a range of decision-making models and investment appraisal methods used by businesses. We explore how the business world never stands still so businesses must adapt to succeed in a dynamic external environment where there are continuous opportunities and threats to businesses of all sizes.
The course is delivered through a variety of teacher-led discussions, case studies, videos, textboojs and student-centred activities. Final assesment will be by three external examinations.
Previous study is not expecred but GCSE English Language and Mathematics grades are required, with a minimum B (or 5) grade in one and a C (or 4) in the other. Also required is a grade B (or 5) or above in at least one predominantly written based GCSE subject
(from English, English Language, English Literature, History, Religious Studies or Sociology).
Please note: students are not permitted to take both AS Businesss and AS Economics in their first year. However, it is possible to take AS Economics in Year 1 then also take A Level Business Studies in Year 2 as an accelerated one year course alongside A Level Economics.
