Computer Science AS & A level at Brentside High School

Course description

You will develop the ability to think systematically, logically and creatively. This will greatly enhance your analytical skills to develop solutions to real life problems and give you the opportunity to analyse key features and trends in the development of technology and computer science. 


The purpose of this course is to develop your programming skills and theoretical knowledge of computer science. You will be required to use the knowledge and skills gained throughout the course to solve or investigate a practical real-life problem. 

Entry requirements

Grade B in GCSE computing or Distinction in ICT Cambridge Nationals, plus grade C in English language and grade B in mathematics


AS level is assessed by an on-line assessment which tests the student’s ability to program and an examination paper.


A level is assessed by an on-line assessment on programming plus an examination paper and a project on a topic of particular interest.

Future opportunities

This course enables students to develop computational thinking skills that are essential for workplace or further studies beyond the scope of computing. 


An AS level or A level in computer science will enable you to follow a range of courses at university or get work opportunities. Students often progress to degree courses in computing or many related specialist fields including: software engineering, information technology, media and internet, or business, consulting and management.
