Science Level 3 - Access to Higher Education Diploma at Chichester College

Course description

Access to HE (Science) is an intensive 1 year course designed to get you into University to pursue a course in Science, or any affiliated subject. This course will seek to develop you as an independent, confident individual and will look to give you skills that cover all of academic university life, including: Conference presentation; Group and Individual presentations; Scientific Essay writing; UCAS application; Personal Statement and CV skills and Exam/Revision techniques.

Course content

Broadly speaking, Biology covers the make up of the cell, through to the exact pathways that organisms use to liberate energy from their environment. There is also a strong component of ecology and looking at the large scale picture of life on earth, as well as a module on Human health and disease. Chemistry runs from the structure of the atom through to looking at complex chemical equilibria and why reactions occur at all. There is a strong practical element and a close study of how chemistry shapes the world around us. There are five Diploma titles to choose from: 
1) Ecology & Environmental Studies 
2) Biomedical Science
3) Medicine
4) Chemistry combined with Biology
5) Physics combined with Chemistry
At your interview there will be a discussion about career goals, which will help you choose the right course. Note: This course cannot be combined with A Levels.

Teaching varies from lectures to practical, with most sessions combining both.

Entry requirements

You need a GCSE grade C in Maths, English Language and Science. There is an interview component. If you plan on going into a dietetics/medicine/physiotherapy/pharmacy/veterinary pathway you will also need volunteer experience to enhance your application to University.

 

Assessment

The course is assessed with a mixture of exams, workbooks, presentations and essays. The exact make up and balance of this depends on your specific pathway.

We ask that students purchase a Lab Coat (can be purchased through the
college) & the course textbooks. There are also at least 2 optional trips
which may have a cost.

 

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this course will allow you to enter almost all
institutes of Higher Education. The pathways are specialised to help
progression into your chosen degree path, but will still allow you to explore
your chosen subjects.

Further information

Access students use labs appropriate to their pathways (so Biology and
Chemistry labs or Chemistry and Physics labs) as well as tutorials
based in lecture environments.

Although relatively small, Chichester still has all the entertainment facilities you’d expect from much larger cities, such as cinemas, a leisure/sports centre, swimming pool, golf courses, a bowling alley, sports clubs, galle
