Design: Product Design/Textiles AS and A Level at The Latimer Arts College
Design is a diverse and enjoyable subject to study, in which you can specialise in Product Design or Textiles.
It is a subject well-respected by universities due to the complexity and variety of skills that it teaches. You will learn how to recognise the quality of products and the robust nature of their design which is a useful life skill.
The subject allows you to express yourself using a variety of media and approaches, whilst also developing new and exciting skills. The course will also include building a good understanding of advertising and marketing related to product design.
An interest in designing is essential, with the ability to produce high quality graphic and practical work, as is an aptitude in learning to work with design computer packages
- Design and make several small products in Year 12 and one major product in Year 13 with supporting portfolios of coursework
- Become proficient using CAD/Computer aided manufacturing methods
- Study various aspects of designing: Materials and Components and Applications, Design and Market Influences, Processes and Manufacture
5 GCSEs (or equivalent Level 2 passes) A* - C including English and Maths. It would be useful to have studied Design at GCSE level but this is not a requirement
Unit 1: A written paper worth 50% of AS marks (25% of A2 marks)
Unit 2: A portfolio worth 50% of AS marks (25% of A2 marks)
Unit 3: A written paper worth 25% of total A2 marks
Unit 4: A project worth 25% of total A2 marks
University and college courses are available in many areas of Design – Fashion, 3D Product Design, Vehicle Design, Graphic Design, Design Engineering, etc. Design graduates are much sought after by industry in this country, in Europe and in the rest of the world. High proportions of our students go on to higher level courses in the creative areas
