Engineering BTEC Diploma Level 2 at The Manchester College

Course description

If you’d like a general introduction to the field of engineering and want to learn more about what roles in the industry might be like, then a BTEC First Level 2 Diploma in Engineering is the perfect place to start. You’ll start with an introductory topic that explores the engineered world, and then complete an additional ten units during the course, with each covering a different topic area. Some of the units you’ll study will focus on health and safety, engineering materials, and mathematics for engineering. You can then choose other units to study from a range of options once you start the course. The course is designed to give you a good, solid understanding of the engineering discipline alongside the skills and knowledge you’ll need to progress onto further, more in-depth study, or employment in the industry.

Entry requirements

To enrol on this course, you’ll need to have at least five GCSEs at grade D or above, including Maths, English and a Science.


Throughout the course, you’ll complete a number of different practical assignments and coursework as part of your assessment. You will also complete an externally set exam.

Future opportunities

Once you have completed this Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Engineering, you’ll have a good understanding of the industry to help you decide on your next steps. To expand your knowledge and skills, you could progress onto a Level 3 BTEC, and then a HNC or Foundation Degree in Engineering.       Openshaw is a suburb of east Manchester, a short bus ride from Manchester’s city centre. Openshaw Campus is built at the heart of the community with an open plan design and attractive green space and water features. Sportcity and the City of Manchester Stadium are close to the campus. Sportcity has a number of sports venues and fitness and sports facilities for the public. There is a 14-screen cinema five minutes away by car or 25 minutes on foot.
