## Course description

Further Mathematics is an AS/A Level qualification which both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in AS/A Level Mathematics. Further Mathematics is designed to be taught alongside AS/A Level Mathematics in Years 12 and 13.

Compulsory unit of Further Pure 1 and two other units which can be application units (Statistics, Mechanics or Decision Mathematics).

Algebra and Graphs, Complex Numbers, Roots and Coefficients of a quadratic equation Series, Calculus, Numerical Methods, Trigonometry, Matrices and Transformations.
M1 33% of AS, 17% of A Level
Mathematical Modelling, Kinematics in One and Two Dimensions, Statics and Forces Momentum, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Connected Particles, Projectiles.
M2 33% of AS, 17% of A Level
Mathematical Modelling, Moments and Centres of Mass, Kinematics, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Application of Differential Equations, Uniform Circular Motion, Work and Energy, Vertical Circular Motion

A2 Course Summary
Two units of Further Pure (chosen from FP2, 3 and 4) and one applications module
FP2 17% of A Level
Roots of Polynomials, Complex Numbers, De Moivre’s Theorem, Proof by Induction, Finite Series, The Calculus of Inverse Trigonometrical Functions, Hyperbolic Functions, Arc Length and Area of surface of revolution about the x-axis
FP3 17% of A Level
Series and Limits, Polar Coordinates, First Order and Second Order Differential Equations.
S2 (or there is the possibility of studying D2)
17% of A Level
Discrete Random Variables, Poisson Distribution, Continuous Random Variables Estimation, Hypothesis Testing, Chi-Square Contingency Table Tests.
There is no coursework element in
AS or A2 Mathematics.

## Entry requirements

An A* or A at Mathematics GCSE. Students must also be studying AS Mathematics.
