English Language and Literature A level at Central Lancaster High School

Course description

The course is aimed at students who wish to follow the 2 strands of English:

  • Language
  • Literature

The language element allows you to examine language used in the world around us.  The literature aspect will give you the opportunity to analyse in depth a range of varied texts.

Course content

The AS level is split into 2 units:

ELLA1 - Integrated Analysis and Text Production - 2 set texts

ELLA2 - Analysing Speech and its Representation - 1 set text and an unseen analysis

 

A2 level - 2 further units:

ELLA3 - Comparative Analysis and Text Adaptation - set text and an unseen analysis

ELLA4 - Comparative Analysis through Independent Study - coursework task on 2 texts.

You will be expected to complete most of the reading of the set texts independently and take part in group discussions about key stylistic features.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A* - C with a grade B in GCSE English and GCSE Literature

Assessment

ELLA1 - 1 hour 30 minutes exam - 75 marks - 50% of AS (25% of A level)

ELLA2 - 1 hour 30 minutes exam - 75 marks - 50% of AS (25% of A level)

ELLA3 - 2 hour 30 minutes exam - 100 marks - 30% of A level

ELLA4 - coursework - 60 marks - 20% of A level

Financial information

Purchase of set texts if students wish to annotate copies - 3 set texts in year 12 and 3 further set texts in year 13.

Future opportunities

All university degree courses would accept this course and it is key for Teaching, Business, Journalism, Marketing and Media.
