CHEMISTRY at Boston Spa Academy

Course description

Chemistry is concerned with the science of matter, particularly its structure, properties and reactions. Chemistry is of central importance to the sciences as a whole as the chemical reactions that it governs are fundamental to all of science.
 

Course content

Course outline for students studying the full A-level - split into 6 modules;

Module 1 - Development of practical skills in Chemistry

Module 2 Foundations in Chemistry

Module 3 Periodic Table and Energy

Module 4 Core Organic Chemistry

Module 5  Physical Chemistry & Transition Element

Module 6 Organic Chemistry & Analysis

 

 

Entry requirements

Achieve 5 or more standard GCSE passes or higher (grade 4 or higher).

Achieve two grade 6’s or higher in combined GCSE Science or a grade 6 or higher in GCSE  Chemistry.

 

Assessment

Paper 1:
Written exam 2 hours 15 minutes
Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry
37% of A level
 

Paper 2:
Written exam: 2 hours 15 minutes

Synthesis and Analytical Techniques
37% of A level
 

Paper 3:
Written exam: 1 hours 30 minutes

Unified Chemistry (Synoptic paper)
26% of A level

Future opportunities

A level Chemistry is essential for Chemistry, Medical, Vetinary and Dentristry degrees.

It is useful for all Science degrees and many other subjects and it is rated highly by top universities - a 'high currency' A level
