Economics AS/A Level at Kennet School

Course description

This course encourages students to: • Develop an understanding of economic concepts and theories through a critical consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life • Apply economic concepts and theories in a range of contexts and to appreciate their value and limitations in explaining real-world phenomena • Analyse, explain and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy and the role of government within it.

Course content

Lessons will involve a wide variety of activities. They will include a mixture of teacher-led explanations of economic theory, working from textbooks, analysing data and markets, watching relevant television programmes, videos and DVDs, using newspaper and other media articles, discussions and debates, working on computers, using the internet and occasionally the school library. Some tasks will be completed individually, others in pairs or small groups.

Entry requirements

5 A*-B GCSEs, including a grade 5 in both Maths and English.


AS level is assessed by two exams. The linear A level is assessed by three exams. Exams feature a mix of multiple choice, short answer, data response and essay questions. We will be following the AQA course.

Future opportunities

Clearly an A level in Economics can lead to a multitude of degree and career options, be it in pure economics, business, finance, banking, accounting, management, government or politics.
