Mathematics (Mechanics 1 & Pure) A level at Havering Sixth Form College
Mathematics is a demanding and highly valued qualification. Maths students study concepts such as quantity, structure, space and change that are essential for our understanding of the world around us.
Mathematics (Mechanics and Pure), deals with motion and forces – if students are studying Physics they should choose this option. Students who are not studying Physics are advised to choose Mathematics (Decision and Pure).
It is also possible to choose statistics in the second year.
You can expect to:
- Study pure Mathematics – algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus and numerical methods
- Study Mechanics mathematics, including mathematics applied to the real world
- Widen and deepen your understanding of mathematical concepts
- Learn to use and apply a wide range of mathematical techniques
One grade B and four grade Cs at GCSE, A/A* Grade Maths GCSE and successful diagnostic test result.
This course is not recommended for students who achieve a B grade in GCSE Maths. Students with a B grade in GCSE Maths (achieved from the higher tier paper) will only be considered if they achieve a high mark in the maths diagnostic test.
Exam Board – AQA
£3.50 - All students must have their own basic mathematical instruments and up-to-date scientific calculator. Also a graphical calculator is recommended. Revision books available at £3.50
Many students progress onto Maths and other degree courses at top universities. Excellent career prospects include jobs in education, finance and government. From IT to insurance, good mathematicians are always in demand.
