Physics AS A2 at Guilsborough School

Course description

We will be offering the OCR/Institute of Physics, ADVANCING PHYSICS course, which incorporates the AS and Advanced GCE elements, reflecting Physics as it is practised and used today.

Course content

AS Level

The AS course describes what Physics is and its place in the world, at the same time providing a sound foundation for the Advanced award.

It is split into two parts:

Physics in Action: Communication; Designer Materials

Understanding Processes: Waves and Quanta; Space and Time

Plus, three pieces of internally assessed coursework (contributing 30%).

A2 Level

The A2 course leads to an Advanced GCE qualification which will enable the student to go onto degree level studies, at the same time providing an interesting and stimulating experience.

It is split into three parts:

The Rise and Fall of the Clockwork Universe: Models and Rules; Matter in Extremes

Fields and Particles: Fundamental Particles; Electric Fields

Advances in Physics

Plus, two pieces of internally assessed coursework (contributing 30%).

Key Skills

Advancing Physics provides many opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate their skills in Communication, Application of Numbers and ICT.

Entry requirements

At least a B grade in Science and Maths

Assessment

Examinations can be taken at intervals during the course, at the end of each year, or all at the end of two years.  Synoptic assessment (drawing together ideas) is an important part of the second year exams.
