Engineering Level 3 Diploma at Basingstoke College of Technology

Course description

This course will appeal to those interested in a broad range of engineering industries including mechanical, design, manufacture, communications and other related sectors. It develops the skills, knowledge and understanding required to prepare students for employment at technician level or for progression to university.

Equivalent to three A Levels, this challenging course enables you to study units of advanced engineering including mechanical, electronics, engineering design, computer aided design with the support of mathematics and science units.

The course covers a wide range of subjects including:

  • Mathematics for technicians
  • Communications for technicians
  • Project manufacture
  • Business systems for technicians
  • Engineering workshop practices
  • Electronic computer aided design
  • Science for technicians
  • Computer aided design
  • Engineering drawing
  • Electrical and electronic principles
  • Computer aided manufacture

There are timetabled sessions designed to enhance skills in English and Maths. ICT skills may also be offered as an alternative if these skills are more appropriate to the programme of study. Students will receive separate certificates on successful completion of the programme.

There may be an opportunity to undertake additional qualifications built into the course that will be assessed by either continuous assessment, a completed portfolio or an end test.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs grade A*- C, including English, Maths and preferably Science or BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Engineering (Merit) and Functional Skills at level 2 in English and Maths.


The course is continuously assessed through assignments, projects and case studies. Students will develop a responsible and co-operative approach to working on their own and in groups. The course uses practical activities, presentations and involvement with local businesses wherever possible.

Financial information

If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free. 
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.

Future opportunities

Students may progress to a Higher National Diploma or degree course, or advanced apprenticeship. Employment opportunities range from telecommunications, electronic and mechanical engineering, design, sales, quality control, maintenance, manufacturing, or production engineering.
