AS/A2 LEVEL MATHEMATICS at Plantsbrook School

Course description

OCR Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Mathematics

Course content

The first year of study leads to the AS level award and involves the study of the three modules below:

Core Maths 1, Core Maths 2, Statistics 1

The second year of study leads to the A Level award and involves the study of modules that build upon those examined in the first year.  The second year modules are given below:

Core Maths 3, Core Maths 4, Discrete Maths 1

Students can walk in the footsteps of Einstein and Newton as they learn pure mathematics and examine the ideas that have given us space travel and microwave ovens.

The study of statistics enables us to make sense of information and supports the understanding of many other subjects such as psychology.

Discrete mathematics is an exciting and modern branch of mathematics.  Most large organisations now employ graduates with skills in this area and pay them well for their talents.  Ever wondered how the internet protects your details with sophisticated codes, or how British Airways maximises its profits by planning the best timetable for its aircraft?  If you have, then discrete mathematics is for you?

Entry requirements

Students should possess a high Grade B or above in GCSE mathematics and a drive and enthusiasm to achieve something valued and worthwhile.

All modules are examined by a 1 hour 30 minute written paper, taken either in January or June.  Each module can be re-taken with the better result counting towards the final grading. For the purposes of this grading, the result of each module counts equally.
