Course description


Unit 1 – Introduction to Language and Literature Study Assessment – Written Exam 1hr 30min Weighting 60% Candidates study an Anthology of thematically linked spoken and written texts. One compulsory question on unseen texts analysis.

Unit 2 – Genres in Language and Literature Assessment – Coursework Weighting – 40% Candidates study a set of paired texts. The assignment is in two parts. The first part asks for an informed discussion of a set theme using extracts from the texts. The second part asks the candidate to write creatively in a way which provides evidence of their understanding of the texts as a whole.

Unit 3 – Talk in Life and Literature Assessment Written Exam 2hr 30min Weighting 60% Candidates answer two questions. The first is based on an analysis of the dramatic effects achieved in the dialogue of an extract from a prescribed play. The second question requires students to compare a conversation scenario from a literary extract and a spoken transcript.

Unit 4 – Text Transformation Assessment – Coursework Weighting – 40% Candidates transform two literary works into different genres which will be chosen from a wider reading list. Candidates will produce a coursework folder that includes the transformed texts and associated commentary

Entry requirements

A* - C grades with a B grade in the applicant's chosen A level subjects for automatic entry. If an applicant attains C grades in the GCSE subjects they wish to study at A levels, entry is subject to a discussion with the Heads of Subject and Head of Sixth Form
