Apprenticeship in Land Based Service Engineering (Intermediate Level 2 or Advanced Level 3) at Newton Rigg College

Course description

Work-based learning and assessment at your place of work with some college based study. Learners must be in a paid work placement to commence an apprenticeship programme. The work-based route involves practising and demonstrating a range of practical and theory skills and includes completing a Work-Based Diploma at Level 2 or 3 plus Functional Skills at an appropriate level.

Learners would usually enter at the Intermediate Apprenticeship (Level 2) stage before progressing to the Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3). Those employed in the industry and have an increased level of responsibility may also be considered for the Advanced Apprenticeship.

Course content

Intermediate Level 2 - Two Pathways:

  • • Agriculture
  • • Ground Care

Course Themes:

• Engines and components • Braking systems on land-based equipment • Hydraulic and electrical diagnostics • Transmission systems • Perform thermal joining and cutting processes • Personal, learning and thinking skills • English and maths provision where applicable

Advanced Level 3

Course Themes:

• Service and repair engines and components • Maintain electronic control and monitoring systems • Service and repair hydraulic systems and components • Service and repair powershift, hydrostatic and CVT transmissions • Inspect and test land-based machinery and equipment, service and repair of suspension systems

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications for Intermediate Level 2, but you will need a work placement.

Advanced Level 3 - You normally need to have sucessfully completed Level 2 and/or have considerable work experience. You need an appropriate work placement or employment which involves a level of responsibility. We may be able to help you find a suitable position.
