Product Design A-Level at Burnham Grammar School
A course in Product Design can offer you:
- Up to date technology
- Industrial and commercial products and practices including CAD/CAM
- Coursework projects involving extensive workshop activities

- Product analysis and commercial design
The course builds on and extends the knowledge, skills and understanding gained at GCSE level.
The subject will be taught in 4 units - units 1&2 are taken at AS level and units 3&4 are taken at A2 level:
Unit 1 - constitutes a portfolio of creative skills presented by the student
Unit 2 - Design and Technology in Practice - covers materials and components, industrial processes and health and safety. The unit will be assessed by written examination [1½ hours] and is worth 40% of the final AS grade.
Unit 3 - Designing for the future - covers industrial and commercial practice, systems and control, design in context and sustainability. It will be assessed by written examination [2 hours] and is worth 40% of final A2 grade.
Unit 4 - constitutes a portfolio/project with a commercial application which is worth 60% of final A2 grade. It is internally assessed and externally moderated.
You must achieve at least 368 GCSE capped points (i.e. your best 8 subjects) for entry to the Sixth form. You must also achieve a C grade in English Language GCSE and Mathematics GCSE alongside meeting the entry criteria for each individual subject. Option 4 is conditional upon achieving 400+ GCSE capped points.
GCSE points: A*= 58, A= 52, B= 46, C= 40, D= 34
B in GCSE Design & Technology – resistant materials or graphics.
AS is 50% of total A level qualification.
UNIT 1: COURSEWORK: Worth 60% of the final AS grade. It is internally assessed and externally moderated.
UNIT 2: WRITTEN EXAMINATION: worth 40% of the final AS grade.
A2 is 50% of total A level qualification.
UNIT 3: COURSWORK: Worth 60% of the final A2 grade. It is internally assessed and externally moderated.
UNIT 4: WRITTEN EXAMINATION: Worth 40% of the final A2 grade.
Design and Technology can be used for careers such as engineering, building and construction, product design, interior design and architecture.
The course is also useful for general employment as it encourages students to develop independent learning and creativity as well as critical evaluation skills and social awareness.
