Apprenticeships in Automotive Maintenance & Repair - HGV and Public Service Vehicles (PSV)

Course content

Advanced Apprenticeships & Apprenticeships in the service and repair of Heavy Goods Vehicle and /or Passenger carrying Vehicles. All off the job training carried out at City College, Coventry on block release.

Training to NVQ Level 2/3, Technical Certificate Levels 2/3 and Key Skills at Level 1/2

You will learn the principles of engines, suspension, transmission and brakes. You will learn how to use instruments for measuring braking, steering etc. You will also acquire the skills to diagnose and rectify faults and to fit components. You will also learn how to carry out many diferent types of inspections on either lorries or passenger carrying vehicles.

Entry requirements

Advanced Apprenticeships : GCSE Grades A - C in English, Maths, I.T. and Science. A good grade in Design/Realisation/CDT is desirable.

Apprenticeships: GCSE Grades D/E in English, Maths, I.T. and Science.

Assessment

 

PSV - A College Assessor will visit your workplace to observe and assess you collecting evidence for your NVQ Portfolio (practical element of the training programme).

 

HGV - A Gta Workplace Assessor will visit you in the workplace every six weeks to observe and assess you collecting evidence for your NVQ Portfolio (practical element of the training programme).

 

PSV/HGV - All the theory element of the qualification is delivered by City College, Coventry on BLOCK RELEASE.During your first block you will be screened to identify any areas that may need development.

Phase tests will carried out throughout each year with an on line examination at the end of theyear for the Technical Certificate. If you are not exempt from Key Skills, you will complete assignments and on line tests during the first 18 months of your training programme.

All learners will be employed status leading to full time employment.

Some companies will send employees to manufuacturers course e.g. DAF, Leyland DAF.

 

IRTE Accrediation leading to Master Technician.

In the road haulage and passenger transport world it is the Heavy Vehicle Technician whose skill keeps fleets of commercial vehicles moving safely and efficiently, and these in turn keep our factories and shops supplied.   Physically you need to be capable of using the special techniques and machinery for handling heavy and complex component parts.
