Course description

AS Use of Mathematics is a relatively new AS qualification.It is very different from other AS qualifications in Mathematics because there is less emphasis on the content and more on applying , understanding , reasoning , and, communicating .You will find it useful if you do not intend to study Mathematics at A2 level but want to continue studying it beyond GCSE, perhaps to support other subjects.

AS Use of Mathematics can combine with most courses, but may be particularly relevant to subjects such as the Sciences, Technology, Business Studies, Psychology, Sociology, and, Geography.AS Use of Mathematics is also suitable for students who are planning to go to university to study a variety of courses where Mathematics is not required, but would be useful.

Course content

AS Use of Mathematics consists of three units:

Working with Graphical and Algebraic Techniques is useful if you have to use Algebra, Functions, and, Graphs in your other studies, for example, Technology, Science, Economics or Business Studies.You will get to learn the usage of graphs software.

Using and Applying Statistics is useful if you have to use statistical techniques and analyse data critically, for example, in Humanities, Social Sciences, Business Studies, Economics, Psychology, Science, Technology, Health & Social Care, Leisure & Tourism.You will develop your mathematical thinking whilst learning about Statistics.

Applying Mathematics extends the use of Mathematics in the areas of Algebra, Functions, and, Graphs.You will learn how to develop mathematical models and think critically about how Mathematics is used.You will develop your powers of mathematical comprehension, explanation, reasoning and communication.

Entry requirements

You will need a Grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics either at Higher or Foundation tier.
