Mathematics A - AS Level at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College

Course description

Maths at AS and A Level will enable you to further your skills and knowledge of the subject. Aspects of the subject which are particularly developed are:
Algebra skills and their use in generalising to gain rules
Understanding of the Trigonometric functions (Sine, Cosine, Tangent)
Skills of interpreting and evaluating Number Sequences
Knowledge of new topics such as Differential and Integral Calculus
Data Handling and complex Probability techniques

An A Level in Mathematics is highly respected among universities and employers. As well as allowing you to study Maths in Higher Education, it is also required for a career in Engineering, many science-based subjects and many financial courses, such as Economics or Accounting. The Statistics you will develop are also highly valued in courses such as Psychology and Geography, which involve much use of these skills.

Course content

This course has 6 modules:

AS - C1, C2, S1
In the first year (the AS year), you will study two modules of Pure Mathematics and one module of Statistics

A Level - C3, C4, M1
You will study two further modules of Pure Mathematics plus one module of Mechanics

Entry requirements

Either an A Grade in GCSE Maths, or minimum Grade B in GCSE Mathematics plus a good spread of GCSE’s including some A's and B's

To go on to A Level, you need to have at least a Grade C at AS Level Maths

Note: If you are joining the school having completed AS Level Maths at another school under another exam board, you will need to transfer the AS to the OCR board. If you have already completed A2 Level Maths under another exam board and wish to improve your grade, you will need to resit all modules under OCR as none of your existing module scores will count.
