French A level at Havering Sixth Form College

Course description

You will develop your French language skills to an advanced level whilst exploring the topics of family and relationships, healthy living and lifestyle, the media and popular culture. There is an emphasis on giving you the grammatical understanding and the vocabulary to express and justify your own opinions in the language and to move away from learning set phrases.

Course content

As the world gets smaller, Britain plays its part in the EU, holidaymakers travel the world and businesses become increasingly international, there has never been such an important time in our history to learn a foreign language. We aim to open your mind to the fascinating aspects of the language, life and times of France and its people.

You can expect to:

  • Read and understand texts
  • Write extended essays
  • Listen to and comprehend the spoken language
  • Understand the key social and cultural aspects of France
  • Express ideas and opinions about key modern issues in written form
  • Talk about important issues in French
  • Study a film in the first year and a novel in the second

Entry requirements

One Grade B and four Grade Cs at GCSE, including a C Grade English GCSE and a minimum of a Grade B GCSE French. Successful completion of a written diagnostic test.

Financial information

Optional Cost

£37.50 - Students are encouraged to buy their own dictionary for out of class use at a cost of around £15 together with their own textbook at a cost of £22.50. Students will also be required to purchase a further textbook in the second year of the course.
