Exercise, Health and Fitness Studies Level 2 Diploma at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College*

Course description

The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Exercise, Health and Fitness Studies (QCF) is a substantial vocational qualification that develops the knowledge, understanding and technical skills needed to become a fitness instructor in gym-based exercise. This course is recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) as being fit for purpose for learners seeking employment as a fitness instructor.

Course content

The mandatory units in this qualification will develop learners' knowledge and skills to enable them to work effectively and competently as a fitness instructor in a gym-based exercise setting. The mandatory units include: anatomy and physiology for exercise; principles of exercise health and fitness, know-how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity; health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment; planning and instructing gym-based exercise; factors affecting participation; leading a healthy lifestyle; people skills; planning and preparing personal exercise and nutrition and lifestyle factors and their effects on health.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have studied at GCSE level and achieved a minimum of grade 4 (grade C) in Maths or English, plus 2 other 4 (grade C) grades, preferably in Science, and PE-based subjects. Applicants must demonstrate (at interview and at a College Taster day) an enthusiasm for the industry, in addition to an interest in sport and/or coaching and a keen motivation to learn.


Sessions will be a mixture of theory and practical lessons, and, wherever possible, underpinning theory will also be demonstrated in a practical context. There will be a variety of assessment methods used (such as written assessments, observations, presentations and discussions), and learners will gain a thorough understanding of the evidence they are expected to produce.

Future opportunities

Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a level 2 fitness instructor, learners may choose to further develop their knowledge and skills and employment opportunities by undertaking a Technical Level qualification at level 3

Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to join the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) as a level 2 fitness instructor.

Employment opportunities as a fitness instructor exist in a variety of gym-based settings, including:

  • Leisure centres and health clubs
  • Hotels and spas.
