Photography and Design (Level 2) at Central College Nottingham

Course description

You will acquire a creative grounding in taking photographs and exploring the art of displaying your images on the page, both hard copy and digitally. You will investigate the connections between image, colour, page layout, typography, design and how your work is perceived by a wider audience. You will work in our state of the art photographic studios and darkrooms, as well as in our professional standard computer studios. You will use industry standard Apple Mac computers and software. This course will enable you to pursue your interests at Level 3 on an Extended Diploma.

Course content

Subjects include:

  • Working with Digital SLR Cameras
  • Experimental Photography
  • Working with Digital Illustrative and Graphic Design Processes and Techniques
  • Building an Art and Design Portfolio
  • Working in the Art and Design Industry
  • Functional Skills in English and Maths

English and Maths are an essential part of your studies and will help you succeed on your course. These subjects will help you develop confidence and are the key employability skills that all employers now look for when recruiting.

Entry requirements

One of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grades A*-D including English Language or Maths*
  • A relevant Level 1 qualification including GCSE English Language and Maths* at grade A*-D

*If you do not have both GCSE English Language and Maths at A*-D, we may accept one of them at Grade E in addition to your 4 GCSEs at A*-D. Functional Skills may be accepted instead of GCSE English and/or Maths. Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE Grade D and Level 2 to GCSE Grade C.

Adults who are aged 19+ without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply.


You will produce a portfolio of work for continuous and ongoing assessment throughout the year. You will also take external tests set by the Awarding Body.

Future opportunities

Level 3 Extended Diplomas. Further study at Level 3 is advised to make the career choices below more readily accessible.

To support your application we will ask you to bring in a school report and a portfolio of work to demonstrate ability and potential.

Materials used on the course can be purchased from the College shop based at your centre. There will be costs for trips and visits and these will be discussed with you at interview.
