Course description

Why study Business BTEC?

BTEC Business provides a general education in all aspects of business. Students will develop problem solving and analytical skills, and will improve their communication with people. 

Course content

The BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business is undertaken over two years. Candidates can be awarded Distinction, Merit or Pass grades, which are equivalent to A, C and E at 'A' level.


Content: There are six compulsory units of study.

Year 1

· The Business Environment

Through this unit you will investigate the ownership of different businesses and how they achieve their targets. A wider view will then be taken, considering how individual business are effected by the economic, political, legal and social environment in which they operate.

· Business Resources

If it is to be successful in a business organisation must efficiently use all of its resources in order to meet their objectives. This includes the people within the business, technology (equipment) and the finance.

· Introduction to Marketing


 The aim of this unit is to give learners an understanding of how market research is  used by an organisation in order to plan and implement the marketing mix for their product or service. 

Year 2

· Business Communication

Through this unit you will consider the different methods of communication used within a business, evaluating their suitability in various situations. You will also develop an awareness of the importance of using information within a business appropriately, understanding the importance of accurate record keeping.

· Business Accounting

The aim of this unit is to enable you to understand the purpose of accounting and the associated process within a business. You will draw up a cash flow forecast, a profit and loss account and balance sheet before evaluating the success of a business using financial ratios.

· Developing teams in business

The aim of this unit is for you to understand the importance of teams,  leadership attributes and skills and the development of teams. You will take part in a series of team activities which will assess your ability to work effectively in a team. 


Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A* - C including English at a C


In order to achieve success students must provide a portfolio of evidence for all six units of study. These portfolios will be based upon a series of assignments, and they will be internally assessed and internally and externally verified.
