Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Makeup Level 3 at Waltham Forest College

Course description

The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-Up (QCF) is a technical level qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed theatrical media make-up artist working with performers to a high level of occupational ability, providing hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries. This course is a progression of skills & knowledge developed in level 2 Hair & Media Makeup.

This is a full time qualification.

Course content

The mandatory units within this qualification include:

- Apply airbrush make-up to face
- Camouflage make-up
- Media makeup
- Style and fit a postiche
- Fashion & photographic make-up
- Apply prosthetic pieces and bald cap
- Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
- Client care and communication in beauty related industries

Added into this programme are two compulsory optional units that have been added into the qualification. They are:

- Create and cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps
- Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector

Assessment

Assessment is concentrated on practical competence. You must be able to demonstrate consistent performance of a commercially acceptable standard of work, combined with written and oral competence in the subject studied. Assessment includes:

- Continual assessment throughout the course
- Written assignments
- Written/online tests
- Practical assessments undertaken on paying clients that must be completed in a commercially acceptable timescale
- Portfolios of collated study evidence

In addition to timetabled classes, there is provision for independent study time. Students will undertake independent learning, investigation and research and bring this to present and share in subsequent classes.

It is a dynamic and creative sector with a wide variety of career opportunities for the enterprising beauty therapist and makeup artist; from small, select provincial salons, large city salons, rural spa retreats, ocean liners, business and enterprise, theatre, film, television, training and product development.
Continued studies will enable you to confidently start your own business venture or franchise, while higher education courses could qualify you for teaching or training posts.

      Trains run to Walthamstow Central from Liverpool Street station (a bus can then be taken to the College, see below). Wood Street station is approximately a 10-minute walk from the College.

      Tube:

      The Victoria Line ends at Walthamstow Central, which is approximately a 15-minute walk to the College. Alternatively, you can get a bus, see below.

      Bus:

      From Walthamstow Central:Bus 275 stops outside the College, 212 stops across the road from the College (Shernhall Street). Buses 97, 357, 34 or 215 stop at the 'Bell Corner' (junction of Hoe Street and Forest Road). From here, the College is approximately five-minute walk.

      From Blackhorse Road Tube Station: Bus 123 also stops outside the College on route between Tottenham and Ilford
